I am absolutely pro-checks. We need to take any legal steps we can to take guns out of those who are mentally compromised or those with a criminal background. Obviously, the gov’t is incapable of monitoring the ways in which many criminals get guns (like, for example, buying a gun under the table from a friend). However, we must pursue all legal paths to prevent further tragedies.
As a gun owner, I have no problem completing a background check at a gun show before I make a nee purchase. I want to know why everyone is pro-checks or against them. Let’s hear it.

The problem with Universal background checks is that people fear that our government is actually just trying to compile a list of all gun owners, so that they can in the end seize them from us. Now, I would agree that this sounds conspiracy theory-ish. However, the latest news reports showing government documents in hospitals and health care facilities asking patients if they own firearms, is starting to make me think they are already trying to compile this list through other means as well. Background checks would be an easier way to compile these lists. Remember, government tyranny does not happen over night, it happens through gradualism. Compiling a universal list of gun owners is the first step to actually taking our guns. They may not do it today, but if they ever decide to, they have the names of the people they need to go and take their guns. Remember, GRADUALISM.
The reason a health care provider is asking about guns is that it is a significant risk factor for harm to have a gun in the home. Pure and simple. Same as a bike helmet, that a competent health care provider should also be asking about cyclists.
@twocents You seriously think that nurses and doctors are working for the government to compile a list of gun owners? Ok, good luck with that gradualism theory.
How do you define someone as mentally unfit for 2nd amendment rights (beyond mental retardation)?
With the expansion of the DSM V, the categorization of people with classifiable mental disorders is expanding greatly due to pushes and inroads from pharmaceutical industries attempting to diagnose and drug everyone. How do you distinguish which of those individuals are fit to bear arms?
Personally I think mr.obama has already shown us his intentions, they are clearly and most definitely to have our guns taken away from us at some given time in the near future.
As far as a background check goes I think a criminal record check is in order, why would we want someone with an armed robbery or murder history to have a gun? It is unlikely these people would try to buy a gun legally anyway. With a non violent police record anyone should be able to legally buy a gun. For those rare cases of the individuals who have some mental health issues and would use their gun to harm others, we have no real way to tell who they are, that’s why those of us who are law abiding have ours to defend against them. Places that are now gun free zones, and are the targets of attack, need to be altered to have armed responders trained and ready that already work in these facilities. The criminally maladjusted will find a way to get a gun. There are millions of illegal guns all over this country. They can ban the citizens guns all they want and the criminals will still have them. The problem never has been honest, caring, decent citizens owning guns, the problem has been that we’re not allowed to use them where and when they are truly needed.
No expanded background checks! There are already laws in place making it illegal for criminals to purchase firearms. However, criminals do not obey laws! The Second Amendment is a Constitutional right! Gun control affects the law-abiding citizens. I am 100% against these ‘background checks.’
